Taking kids on road trips can be hard. Whether it’s a five-hour drive or a multi-day trip across the country, there are ways to make the trip more enjoyable for the whole family.

  • Take the right size vehicle. A small car might be great for you, your wife, and your two kids when you’re headed to the store, but it won’t do for a road trip — especially a long one. You’ll need to pack a lot of stuff for the trip and you won’t fit it in a compact with two car seats in the back. It will be a more enjoyable trip if you rent a bigger vehicle such as a minivan.
  • Pack snacks and treats. Although typically parents try to keep to an eating schedule with three meals a day and snacks in between, road trips are the exception. Food is a great way to keep kids occupied, especially if it’s something they don’t normally get to eat. Just be sure that the food you choose can easily be eaten and is something that can be vacuumed up easily. You want things that you can clean out of the car easily when you get home.
  • Bring entertainment. If you haven’t invested in a portable DVD player or other device, such as the iPad, that plays movies, now is the time. You’ll be grateful when your kids are being entertained in the car. Just make sure you have something they can all see and hear or more than one device.
